Dark , depressing films are considered "camp" ?

I finally watched this and I just feel like its one of the most dreariest , depressing films I have ever seen. (Not to mention what we all know happened to Sharon Tate)
I find it funny though that is film is regarded as pinnacle of "camp " or "campy"-whatever the gays call it. To me, it was just very dark and depressing movie with no point.
