How come in old movies like this, right before a scene fades to black, the colors change? I don't mean darkening as part of the fading to black, I mean the colors all of a sudden change for a split second and then the fade happens.
I know it's a film thing, can someone explain?
Forgot about this, though I was certainly aware of it. My guess is that it probably had something to do with color "timing," but I'm not knowledgable enough to elaborate any further.

Not only with fades to black, it happens with cross-fades too.
Something tells me it has something to do with conversion to other formats (DVD or Blu-Ray, for example), but I can't be sure.
