Dr. Diabolo sure ain't cheap...yet the woman in the second story could afford that, but didn't have the money to own more than one dress.

Although the film clearly had an eye on the US market- given the name American actors in the cast- where chances are the majority of people wouldn't have known how much £5 was in 1968.

I think Americans in the past knew the pound had a high value. In the old days, the British ordinarily dealt in shillings. Like in The House That Dripped Blood (1971), Jon Pertwee buys a vampire costume for 13 shillings.

Five dollars might have been a big deal in the 1960's too. In Caddyshack (1980), they argue about 50 cents for a coke. Still, five dollars adjusted was inflation was roughly 43 dollars today, so not as steep.
