Original soundtrack

I fell in love with this film when we were doing The Boy Friend in Junior High School. I saw it when it opened. I wonder why no one hasn't issued a cd version of the original soundtrack.

The film does get bogged down in the second half and I generally leave the room whenever Carol Channing comes on as she has always rubbed me the wrong way...

And I had already a horrible crush on Mary Tyler Moore...:)

The movie got awards but lost money at the box office as I recall. One of Ross Hunter's few flops..

Upon its release in 1967, it earned $35 million in the US alone which, adjusted for inflation, means over $220 million today. That's huge.

I don't know where these stories about "Millie" being a dud got started, because it was generally considered a success. With a budget of $6 million yielding a worldwide gross of $40 million, it most definitely showed a healthy profit. And it was a fairly popular picture as well, coming in at number 10 on the most profitable pictures list for 1967.

"Flop"

I don't think "Millie" was a flop.

BUT - I think Hunter's next movie - "Rosie" - a "madcap" movie about an eccentric rich lady played by Roz Russell was a FLOP.

That might be what you're thinking of.

"Don't call me 'mac'... HONEY!"

When it was just shown on TCM, Robert Osborne said it was Universal's biggest hit up unitl Airport in 1970, three years later. I remember it was a huge it. Theaters packed. Saw it about three times during its release.
