Funniest Moments

Was anyone else surprised by Julie Andrews' comic ability in this movie?! The scenes where she looks at the camera, wide-eyed and perplexed, are priceless.
What do you think is the funniest scene in TMM? I think it's a tie between Millie's first meeting with Trevor Graydon and the "Alleluia's" that resonate when she sees his face, and the whole Tom Sawyer scene where she's trying to be saucy and provacative.
"I never read Tom Sawyer. Is he...sexy?"
"He was twelve!"
"Well, if ya got it...ya got it."

And, as an afterthought, the list she's written of potential bosses...I particularly enjoyed that she wrote "Rounder" beside one of them.
Classic.

I know, lvox...despite what my username might imply, I don't think this movie is the greatest. I am very thankful for the dvd so I can skip over everything that includes Mary Tyler Moore, jazz babies or the psychotic kidnapper of a house mother. This pretty much leaves Julie singing, Julie dancing, and the overture. Good enough for me :)
I guess I love Millie's interaction with Trevor Graydon because a) John Gavin is hot, b) I'd never seen J-Ands play an ingenue before, and c) her jaw dropping and the 'alleluia's' were just too funny (I would've done the same thing).
I checked out rounder, too, because Millie has it written on her list of 'possible employers'; I guess in this context it would mean a 'dissolute person'.

I loved when Mrs Meers' attempts to drug Dorothy failed - especially when the apple shrivels!

What is it, magic popcorn? Does it produce some kind of dizzying high?

reply

I love it every time that they have to tap in the elevator! I think it is the greatest. And because of it, I tap dance EVERY time I am in an elevator.

I like the part where Trever Graden is drugged by a tranquilizer dart & he stays poised in the same position!

I'm quite partial to the part about Tom sawyer as well.

If ya got it, you got it. Kills me everytime!

reply

Just to be different, the Tom Sawyer bit's really funny and makes me laugh my face off.
But my fave part is after Trevor Graydon's been drugged and, whenever the camera is on him, we hear heroic music. THAT'S the funniest part for me...

I am so GLAD- I took a chance and watched this movie! Julie Andrews is PHENOMenal and I must say she has aged beautifully (Not so much for Mary Tyler Moore)! IT's a shame what happened to her voice though (I think she had something on her vocal cords - (Saw an interview on Larry King Live)! I did think that Mary T M was going to be way too annoying to watch but I actually liked her in this role! THis IS the happiest MOvie on earth! Some of the funniest parts for me was with Muzzy(Carol CHanning)! OMG - she was SO over the top! Julie Andrews was hilarious in this movie and I love her singing and what a dancer!

ON a side note- Even though I loved Audrey Hepburn in My Fair Lady I would have liked to see Julie Andrews in the movie Role! AFter seeing how funny and versatile and ALIVE she was in this role - I know she could have done the movie role of Eliza to perfection!

ONe more side note - I did enjoy that I could watch this with my young cousins and I don't know if a director could pull off TMM today without it being too saccharin! or maybe too obscene! Anyone agree or disagree???

My 82-year-old dad and I still laugh at our favourite line:

Millie: "On the fat side!" (just before "Poor Butterfly")

"On the Fat Side" is the title of a song cue in the stage version of "TMM" FYI.

reply

"On the fat side", referring to the two dozen plump pink roses? A great line.

I love it when Muzzy dances on the zylophone. I love Carol Channing in this film!

My favorite line is from Miss Dorothy, after our intoduction to Judith Tremayne.

JT: We all remember Jimmy's father. He had such a green thumb. We hope that Jimmy would take after him, but so far there's been little evidence. ... That gross diamond ring of Muzzy's! Jimmy, it took my breath away.
Dorothy: Not completely, Miss Tremain.
JT: No. Not completely.
Dorothy: (glares at JT as she walks away) BITCH!

LMAO!

I bought the DVD and I've enjoyed watching TMM a lot. The funniest moments? They're so many of them.

1 - When Julie undresses in the closet and tap dances.
2 - "I can't wait for the Christmas party"
3 - The whole speedtest moment. There are a lot of funny details in that scene.

Personally speaking, this is Julie Andrews' best acting. Her comic timing is perfect. And she looks great too.

I like when the apple shrivels. And the Tom Sawyer bit. And just about EVERYTHING in the movie! Also, when Jimmy is climbing up to Millie's office: He looks at a gargoyle, "Why hello Miss Tremaine!"

"It looks like a flamingo threw up in here!"~Beaches

my favs:

From Bea Lillie:

"Thank you. NO!"

and...

"King! Fu! Fu king fu!"

reply

I agree with all of these, and also Dorothy going, "It's Jewish!" at the wedding, like it just occurred to her.
This is such a great movie.

reply

I love the whole scene where Millie is trying to--I don't know--seduce Trevor Graydon in his office. Right after she says, "Do you have a mome?" and Mr. Graydon says, "What?", she purses her lips a few times, and answers "A moment." I think that pursing of the lips is HILARIOUS. Although, I'll admit to laughing at many dumb things, there is no denying how silly that little touch is.

"All you need to start an asylum is an empty room and the right kind of people."

Miss Dorothy's lines after she's been rescued from the Chinese Opium Den:
"No, forward dear, forward."
"Oh, look, it's Mrs. Meers. Maybe she'd like a lift?"

reply

"Do you have a pen?"
"For what?"
"To write a check."
"Lady, you're gonna write me a check for 35 cents?"
