Anticipates another film

Let's Scare Jessica to Death (1971) seems to have taken some cues from this film.

*There's a ferry, going to an island

*Unfriendly inhabitants

*House containing a problematic inhabitant

That's all I can think of offhand, but I'll bet those were elements from the Shuttered Room which they thought would be effective if used again.

I just watched this on the new Warners DVD (where THE SHUTTERED ROOM is coupled with the dreadful IT!) that's currently only selling at Best Buy. Anyway, my thoughts as I watched it was that it felt like a warmup to STRAW DOGS. Also, I have to say I didn't think it was any good, but a nice try.

Nice to see you folks draw spot-on conncections between three films that I really love. Another major narrative and thematic link between The Shuttered Room and the great Let's Scare Jessica to Death would be that the female protagonist in both is marked by significant mental/emotional vulnerability... if not outright madness!

Yeah, I thought of the same thing while watching "Room" - the plot connections between it and "Jessica." Of course, the big difference is that the latter is actually a good movie...

Nah, they're both good films, tho I do love Let's Scare Jessica to Death more.

You say tamato, I say tamata.

The Shuttered Room has the bonus of Carol Lynley :)

Yeah, Lynley's my favorite actress, so there's definitely that. She's great in TSR, too. On the other hand, Zohra Lampert gives one of my very favorite film performances ever in LSJtD.

LSJTD is also a personal favorite of mine, so I find it interesting that this film resonated with me in a similar way. I actually think THE SHUTTERED ROOM a banner piece of film, quite excellent on all counts, and along with the similarities to LSJTD already mentioned, it also has a similar odd feel to it, kind of quirky and unsettling.
