(I wrote spoilers 2 times already so if I spoil the ending for you dont complain)

SO, the secret behind the shuttered room was that they kept locked up the main characters twin??? If they were the same age why did they make her seem taller at the start of the movie when the crazy sister got out of the room and got near the normal sister's bed???

reply

I agree, that was wrong - just to make us assume it was some crazed man. When the mother walked her back to the shuttered room, she looked up to her face. But then, she did whisper, "Come on, Lizzie (or Tizzie)," which led you to believe it was a (tall) female.

reply

I never understood that either. She was the same age as her sister so she would be the same size and somewhat manageable for the parents.
For that matter, why chain her up like an animal? Was it shame of having had her? A state hospital would have been an improvement over the conditions she lived in.

The implication from the utter dread of the parents & Susannah was that she was so wild & crazy she was very difficult to control; and probably demon-possessed, which would've made her much stronger than a 4 year-old girl.
