i think monty python ripped this off ! too many skits resemble parts of python like paul Mccartney playing the colonel and the desk being in the fields! just two examples to name !
Did the Beatles influence monty python ? that was what I noticed yesterday when I watched it for the second time ( with a 30 year gap ) . The part with the marathon race reminded me of the silly twits race in python. Also the restaurant scene is pure Meaning of Life .
Considering I'm pretty sure that's Eric Idle selling the tickets at the beginning, I think Pythons may have been around. Also, the members of Python were doing other projects at the time, so I think there could have been some cross-influences.
The guys from Python and the Beatles were friends. Python just did better what might have been alluded to in this film. Even if some ideas may be similar, let's not forget that George Harrison appeared in Eric Idle's "The Rutles," and I think they also helped fund Holy Grail.
no not the holy grail but the life of brian.... george harrison alone funded it mostly really... and he's in the movie too.... his only line is *hello* and i think it's not him really saying that. And george became Eric's friend after a while when the pythons became the pythons in 1969. People can have similar ideas without ripping off someone elses, you know!
No not the Holy Grail. George funded The life of brian. Holy grail was funded by of all things the profits from the "dark side of the moon" Pink Floyd were Python fans also. Thanks Pink. (which one is pink?)
Not ripped off, just interconnected. Remember that the Bonzo Dog Band appears in this movie. The Bonzos also appeared in the TV show "Do Not Adjust Your Set" with pre-Pythons Michael Palin, Terry Jones and Eric Idle. Neil Innes of the Bonzos (a.k.a. The Seventh Python) was in The Rutles with Eric Idle and also wrote their music, and Neil played several roles in Holy Grail including Sir Robin's minstrel, etc. etc.
The Python were also there in the Concert for George, around 2001-2002 in the Royal Albert Hall, London. Tom Hanks even replaced the late Graham Chapman. Of course, they were friends. ;-)
No. They both were ripping off the Goon Show. Well, they weren't really ripping off the Goons, but they were inspired by them. The Goon Show with Peter Sellers and Spike Milligan was very popular in England. The Beatles and the Pythons grew up in the same era and were fans of the same show. If you go back and watch some more British comedies from the era you'll notice that the humour was fairly common. It seems unique now when you isolate them from the rest of the movies & TV shows of the time, but if you if you look at them all collectively you notice that the style of humour was fairly common.
Interesting you should bring up Python, because i recently read "The Pythons Autobiography" and in the book (pages 265-66, if you have the hardcover), they say that at one stage, the Pythons were going to put Magical Mystery Tour out with "Holy Grail"...but then they saw the film again and changed their mind. That would have been an interesting double feature, but I think MMT would've suffered big time when compared to Holy Grail. (Actually, I'll try that one day and get back to you all!)
