I read somewhere they tried to make this picture around Selma, Al. but the local rednecks were outraged at the mixing of the races. True?

I don't know about filming in Selma, but where it was filmed produced results just as bad. It was filmed in the Baton Rouge La area and some scenes were shot in St Francisville La and also Hammond La. The actors stayed at the nicest hotel/motel in Baton Rouge, the Belmont. When it was known that both blacks and whites were staying at the hotel, i,e, Jane Fonda, Michael Caine, Diahann Carroll, Bobby Hooks; the crew tucks had their tires slashed and threats were issued. Right next to East Baton Rouge Parish was Livingston Parish where the grand dragon of the KKK, Robert Shelton lived.
