I wonder if they were used and varied for different prisoners in multiple hangings like this. In the movie they all fell roughly the same distance...but according to the table of drops the heavy set guy smoking a cigar would only need less than 5 feet but the kid would need closer to 10.

In reality, our Mr. Schmid was a pro (the bastard). He would have made sure the rope looped over the top of the gantry was the correct length.

In Movie Land, they didn't think many would notice that detail.
