Why did the main villain hang himself?

It must have been excruciating on the end of the rope choking for a couple of minutes, better to hand yourself in to the hanging judge and let him hang you quickly with a broken neck. That villain's stupid decision has baffled me to this day.

He killed himself to deny Cooper the privilege.

He also died by the same method that his posse tried to end Cooper's life..

Why do people hang themselves? Good question, particularly when other options are available. I can see it in a prison cell when there is no other option, but the news is filled with people who kill themselves by hanging.

I agree - I don't get it, or killing oneself by jumping off a high building. I would think carbon monoxide or even a bullet to the brain would be far preferable.

Maybe Captain Wilson had emptied his revolver and hanging was his only option was to kill himself.

Fair enough.

I think it's meant to be kind of an ironic ending to the man considering the circumstances.

But on that note, firearms are the most popular method of suicide in the US today by a slight majority (51%) but hanging is next with nearly a full quarter of suicides to be done by hanging (also includes carbon monoxide poisoning). I'm sure there is some reasoning behind it. I was most surprised to find that "poisoning" (includes drug overdose) only counts for 16.6% of all suicides. I would think out of the three that drug overdose would be the easiest to commit psychologically speaking and most people would think that it has relatively little pain.
