The killer??
In the movie, i noticed each time a new criminal comes to town the woman must identify him to see if that's the one who killed her husband. My questions is or maybe I MISSED IT,but DOES SHE EVER FIND OUT WHO THE KILLLER IS?

i agree. But if it were me,i would go on with my life with eastwood. It STIll wouldnt hurt to keep an eye out for those men.lol
shareNever underestimate anyone with a grudge, especially what happened to Inger Stevens. You really can't blame her.
shareYa, but I think the point the film tries to make is that you have to get on with your life. You can't let it to continue to destroy you. Which I think is the poignancy of Jed and Rachel's relationship - the promise of the future of their relationship, and they can put their pasts behind them.

"Ya, but I think the point the film tries to make is that you have to get on with your life."
That's good advice, yet, some vindication for victims of heinous crimes may be necessary for a reasonable amount of closure.
Agreed, agreed. But at what point does vindication take over your life, especially when you're chasing "ghosts," as the movie puts it. The film addresses these complicated issues of capitol punishment.
shareHi Mississippi20,
I think it's important that vindication is not confused with revenge. What Rachel (Inger Stevens) experienced was a lot more serious and tramatic than a purse snatching.
Crime victims are entitled to a reasonable amount of vindication so they can then get on with their lives. Otherwise, they might want to take the law into their own hands, like Cooper (Clint Eastwood) wanted to do.
I'm in favor of capital punishment. With today's technology, ie DNA, there is less chance of executing innocent people.
Watching the public hangings portrayed in this movie, might give people some 2nd thoughts about committing capital crimes.
Of course Rachel's penetrators should face justice, and the law should do all they can to catch them, but I don't think that's the point.
I think the point is that she shouldn't let the incident ruin the rest of her life by letting herself be consumed by revenge.
Hi Mississippi20,
"I think the point is that she shouldn't let the incident ruin the [rest of her life] by letting herself be consumed by revenge."
Agreed. Reasonable vindication is necessary for proper closure. It's a matter of balance. Under kill--(doormat), vs, overkill (ghost chasing or even vigilante/lynch mob tactics).
Judge Fenton (Pat Hingle) emphatically pointed that out to Marshall Cooper (Clint Eastwood) by threatening him with "You take the law into your own hands and I promise you'll swing from one of those (gallow) ropes."
