I thought the music was unbearable. I hated everything about this movie, but the music, to me, was the worst of all the bad elements of it.

The music was overbearing. Dominic Frontiere is not known for subtlety. Whole scenes are scored with obvious and standard Hollywood style-music. I'm no fan of the oafish Ennio Morricone and his absurd electric guitar go-go music from the spaghetti westerns, but Frontiere only offered thunderous music cues (pounding "dramatic moment", or an over-lush syrup-string "love theme"). Any time a music soundtrack stands out and begs to be noticed that means the composer/orchestrator isn't doing their job.

I agree, I think you are exactly right.

To be fair though, this film has some pretty memorable main themes.........but aside from that, I completely agree with you.

Think when Eastwood is "rescued" and he's put in shackles and into the jail wagon.....the music is completely overdramatic.

Yeah, one of Dominic Frontiere's best. Brought into the soundtrack game by the great Alfred Newman, Frontiere was very versatile, scoring much of the original Outer Limits, Stunt Man, The Love War, the Twelve O'Clock High TV theme, and many others.

His Hang em High score was epic and riveting. Tragically, this score did not make it onto the original soundtrack album. The album only featured a watered-down, sparsely-orchestrated ghost of the music actually heard in the film. Hopefully this score has been, or will soon be, released in its original format.

The soundtrack is worth getting. As of this writing, you can hear clips from it at http://lalalandrecords.com/HangEmHigh.html

List price is $20, but I've seen it on eBay for less...

The Sandblasters also did one on the tribute comp CHINESE CHECKERS. (I'd gladly trade MP3s...)

Listen to this and see if it isn't the same song without the words...
