HANG 'EM HIGH MEETS MY HIGH EXPECTATIONS!

Clint Eastwood stars as former sheriff turned cattleman Jed Cooper who survives a lynching, becomes a deputy marshal, and hunts done those who done him wrong. While it may sound like just another western, it isn’t. Hang 'Em High is an excellent depiction of the attitudes towards law and order in the old West. Crime is not tolerated, it is considered sinful - yet people show up in droves to see a mass hanging in what becomes a carnival atmosphere and sing religious hymns before the execution. The presiding judge (who's character may have been based on the real life Judge Roy Bean) expresses open remorse that there could not be a better way to do things - but does not hesitate to send even teenagers to the gallows. I definitely recommend this movie.

Hang 'Em High lacks the aesthetic appeal of Eastwood's other Westerns, but as the original poster indicated, the film is quite thought-provoking in exploring the complexities, contradictions, and paradoxes of frontier justice. Give it another chance at some point, and assess the movie on its own merits, as opposed to using it as a point of comparison.
