no, it shouldn't be higher
shareI gave it an 8 but that's just cuz i'm a die hard clint fan. if it got to be somewhere higher than 7 i'd be surprised.
"Well if there's gunna be any shooting, I gotta get my rest."
And I gave it 4 - it almost bored to death :( And I'm Clint's fan also!
shareThe western genre can typically be boring, it normally leads up to a big scene in the end. In this movie it just wasn't THAT special... but a 4? Honestly? Oh well, as long as you still hail Clint!!!

There's no doubt the realism between the vigilantism v law was amazing. The struggle Eastwood has with the judge is a pretty powerful element to the film. I'm not doubting the film at all, i own it, and i love watching it. For me personally, there is no FILM better than TGBU. I honestly believe that it is if not the best movie ever, one of the top 5. I would prefer Unforigven before this film, along with High Plains Drifter and Pale Rider. Even the Outlaw Josey Wales, but that is not saying anything bad about Hang 'em High because it fits right in there with the rest...
fyi - Hang 'em High was Clints first western in the US. The Spaghetti westerns were made years early, the good the bad and the ugly (the last of the 3) was done in 64.

There's so many different routs to take while filming a movie in the western genre. I will agree that this one took a very very unique path, but it lacked in some elements that makes westerns really big, and i'm not saying this was a bad film at all, it's a very likable movie, i'm just trying to explain why i believe this is a good western but would deserve nothing more than a 7.0 rating.

As for Unforgiven, I don't find it "entertaining". For me it is successful attempt at making film about real west, where hot shots spitting tons of bullets from their guns are plain fiction. Wild West stripped of it's usual mythology. I find this movie just great (gave it 8)!
shareHang 'em High was Eastwood's first American film. It could've used a bigger budget as the film and its soundtrack almost resemble a television production at times, but it's still good.
As mentioned, Hingle was great, and I think the exchange of dialogue between him and Eastwood are among the highlights of the film. Eastwood must've liked him too as he also worked with him in The Gauntlet and Sudden Impact. The film does have intersting thematic value on capitol punishment.

The only bad thing about this movie is the title.
"Hang Em High" is a spaghetti title, not a title for a serious western which is what this is.
I didn't think this movie was really too booring. In fact, I thought it moved at a fairly decent pace.

Where there's smoke, there's barbecue!
yeah seriously this film is much better than the 6.8 it gets.
works for me
OP said, "underrated"
my reply... i feel it's rated about right as i gave it a 7/10 but no higher for sure (and no lower either ;) ) cause im a Clint Eastwood fan and i feel his best films ever in general are his westerns, but i feel this film was overall one of his weaker western films.
here is a list of all his westerns pretty much (not in any order)...
1.Unforgiven (1992) (9/10, it's a little slow paced, but it's different from every other western Clint has done and it builds up the end scene real well!)
2.Pale Rider (1985) (7/10, but closer to a 8 than a 6)
3.The Outlaw Josey Wales (1976) (9/10, probably his best non Sergio Leone western, especially if you dont count Unforgiven since Unforgiven aint the typical western)
4.High Plains Drifter (1973) (9/10, but closer to a 8 than a 10)
5.Joe Kidd (1972) (7/10, also one of his weaker westerns but i probably like this a little more than 'Hang Em High')
6.Two Mules For Sister Sara (1970) (8/10)
7.Hang Em High (1968) (7/10, probably my least favorite of his westerns overall but it's still good ;) )
8.The Good, The Bad & The Ugly (1966) (10/10, without breaking a sweat ;) (this is also probably Sergio Leone's masterpiece!. either this or 'Once Upon A Time In The West' (1968) (10/10)) )
9.For A Few Dollars More (1965) (10/10, no less than a 9 for sure... Lee Van Cleef was also great in this as i feel he was strong enough to carry the film by himself if Eastwood had not been in it)
10.A Fistful Of Dollars (1964) (9/10, but closer to a 8 than a 10... worst of the three Sergio Leone westerns )
out of his 10 western films i would say my 'best to worst' by there numbers are...
8,9,3,1,10,4,6,2,5,7
Five at best. There wasn't anything particularly special about it.
