Pat Hingle was great in this flick

Pat Hingle,as the hanging judge, was great in this flick.I think he got nominated for an oscar for this role.

Hingle was terrific as the spiffily sadistic hanging judge, but he did not receive an Oscar nomination. He would later appear in two more Eastwood films, The Gauntlet (Eastwood, 1977) and Sudden Impact (Eastwood, 1983).

Hingle's ability just reminds me of how many great actors like him go unsung. Hey not everybody is a star, but he sure is good at his job...

I liked Pat Hingle's performance in two of the old TV Fugitive episodes.
(1) "Search in a Windy City," where Hingle plays the role of Chicago newspaper columnist, Mike Decker, who desperately needs a story, so he hides Dr. Richard Kimble (David JANSSEN) in his apartment from Lt Gerard.
(2) As the sadistic, corrupt sheriff of an Arizona town in, "Nicest Fella You'd Ever Want To Meet."

Agreed

I've never seen a poor performance from Pat Hingle, even when the movie itself was of questionable quality.

reply

And I liked it. What's your point?

reply

I was agreeing with you - and enlarging on the point.

reply

In this low budget film (Eastwood's first American movie), the exchanges between Eastwood and Hingle are the best parts of the film.....the opening sequence is pretty cool too.

His acting really went off the deep end in Sudden Impact. I watched it last night and it had me thinking in my head; "Was this the same guy who played the hanging judge?!?" He was great in Hang Em High.

His lines with Clint were my favorite parts of this movie and he was such a multi-dimensional character. He had his reasons for being the "harsh line of justice" in a wild territory and ultimately believed in what he was doing despite the personal toll of the hangings. Hingle did a fantastic job with the delivery and back and forth with Clint. I'm sure another actor might have done well, but he did such a great job, I can't imagine anyone else in the role, personally speaking.
