THE GALLOWS

After repeatedly watching the gallows scenes, I've noticed there are 6 nooses, 6 trapdoors and 6 sandbags, but only 4 rings used to operate these 6 trapdoors. At the 6 prisoner hanging, the hangman (Bert FREED) inserted a thick wooden stick into these 4 rings in order to operate all 6 trapdoors at the same time, yet, only used 1 of these rings to operate a trapdoor for the single hanging earlier in the movie.
ANY COMMENTS? Thanks.

Hi SevenKal-ElGuiry,

You may be right. I just love to nit-pik details. Thanks.

What a very creative way to witness for our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ!

God Bless You!

Is this IMDB or a freaking tent revival? Save that crap for church.

Delusional.

Anyone can put anything they like in their signature, providing it is not obscene, and anyone else can comment about it if they want to. This is America, and we are free. Get over it. Or report it to IMDB as hate speech, if you think it will do you any good.

Captain, I'm willing to bet that Qview32 wouldn't object one bit if a muslim signed his entries with some sort of praise for allah, but write just one bit of praise for CHRIST, and the whole bicoastal, overeducated, politically-correct world jumps down your throat. I guess it's because Christ is the actual savior!

Can only assume that two of the rings operated two doors each, and the other two operated one door each.

Hi Blarhhh,

Acknowledged. Thanks.

I think just maybe there were only four trap doors

It's possible that each ring would ordinarily open just one trap (configured for each hanging event), but when the whole six where used at one time, all the doors could have been tied together, and all hoops pulled to make sure there wasn't too much strain on just one rope.

Hi strntz,

Interesting point. I didn't think of it. Thanks. Best.

But why the sandbags? This puzzles me as the weight of the condemned is enough to spring the trap door. Never saw sandbags in any other hanging scene in a film.

reply

I've wondered the same thing. Perhaps it's an assist in opening the trap doors.
Maybe this will be of some help.

Best.

The sandbags make death quicker w/o a lot of needless hanging and kicking until death occurred.

reply

vestdennis is correct. The sandbags were considered humane, as they ensured that the rope snapped the neck of the condemned, granting instant death. Without the sand bags, there was the possibility that they would merely choke to death. That can take awhile.

Hanging doesn't insure instant death. If done correctly with the long drop method the hanged's neck is broken and the person is supposed to be rendered unconscious but not dead. Death occurs by strangulation. Truman Capote witnessed the hanging portrayed in Cold Blood and testified that death by strangulation in those cases took 20 minutes. Were the convicts awake and just paraplegics? Who knows?

The heavier the person standing on the trap door, the harder it is to open it! Picture a typical sliding lock like you'd see on a public restroom door (ignore the poetry written inside). It slides fairly easily, but now imagine someone pushing hard against the door when you try to slide it open. Would it slide easily with the pressure on it?

When the sandbags were released, they fall a few feet and build up enough inertia to give the latches on the trap doors a good yank, ensuring the traps snap open regardless of how heavy the person standing on it is.

It is bad to drink Jobu's rum. Very bad.

Thanks strntz.
Your post makes logical sense. Some gallows used to yank the condemned upwards while the gallows in this movie showing the prisoners falling.

Is it possible there were two sets of rings? Perhaps the trap doors were too far apart to have one rod control all 6 at once. When the camera zooms out from the Judge's perspective, you can see the hangman and then someone is standing pretty close to him in the same manner. I don't know. I do not have the film to rewind and/or pause to analyze it.

I did notice this too while watching and maybe it is just a goof in the end. Good spot though.

Hi tiger01.

I believe the person next to him is a doctor. The hangman(Bert Freed) seems to be the only one making any movements in order to release the trap in both the single hanging and the six man hanging.

Those were a recreation (set built) of the story's real gallows located in Fort Smith Arkansas (fort grant in the story), I climbed on them as a kid in the 70's. They are behind a fence now. Cant explain the missing two rings though/

reply

Thanks, kisersouze. I'm still a little stumped on the two missing rings.
