John to his father
What do you think of John's speech to his father?
shareI was shocked at first when he said he owed him nothing because what he did was what a father is supposex to do. I feel conflicted about that. But, it is true that John was a grown man and could make his own decisions. He didn't need his fathers permission. But, he did want his support.
shareI thought he was dead on and I 100% agreed with his point.
shareI thought he was spot on.
shareI didn't have a problem with the overall content of his speech, but every time I watch it I'm startled by the tone, as well as when he says, "not until your whole generation has lain down and died will the deadweight of you be off our backs." Even though I agree with what he's saying, I'm struck by a son using these particular words to his father.
shareRoger Ebert started reviewing movies in 1967, and in his four star review of that film, he found that Poitier was extremely polite and deferential to Spencer Tracy but...THAT way...to the "Negro" father.
And Ebert didn't like that.
