Oscar winner for best song?? You got to be bleeping kidding!!!!

I can't believe the piece of **** Talk to the animals won over Thoroughly Modern Millie for best song! Well that shouldn't be a surprise the Oscars selections for best song have been pretty damn goofy.

reply

I am going to have to disagree here. I am old enough to remember BOTH these films in first run, and "Talk to the Animals" is the song I remember, not "Millie."

I'd say this time the people who picked the best song of the year made the right choice.

reply

The best song of 1967 was obviously The Bare Necessities. How that didn't win is beyond me.

reply

Agreed. "The Bare Necessities" gets my vote that year.

Even within DOCTOR DOLITTLE, "Beautiful Things" and "When I Look In Your Eyes" are better songs.

reply

It is possible that Talk to the Animals is more a book-song being a sung soliloquy than your suggestions. Could that have driven their decision?

reply

The competition:
"The Bare Necessities" from "The Jungle Book"
"The Eyes of Love" from "Banning"
"The Look of Love" from Casino Royale" (MY favorite among the nominees)
"Thoroughly Modern Mille" (title song)

Songs That Could Have Been-And SHOULD Have Been Nominated INSTEAD of "Talk To the Animals"
"The Happening" -title song
"To Sir With Love"-title song (How'd they miss THAT one?)
"This Is My Song" from "A Countess From Hong Kong"
"Theme from 'Valley of the Dolls'

reply

There were quite a few nice songs in THE HAPPIEST MILLIONAIRE as well...and the theme from BAREFOOT IN THE PARK was terrific too.

"Samantha! You picked a lemon in the garden of love!"

reply

"To Sir With Love"-title song (How'd they miss THAT one?)

My thought exactly and how could they miss "Mrs Robinson" or "Sound of Silence" / The Graduate ?!

"All sugg and no pick makes bump a dull boy"

reply

"The Sounds of Silence" was written in 1965, two years before "The Graduate". It was included on the soundtrack but not written for the movie, so it was ineligable. But you're spot on about "Mrs. Robinson".

reply

THe recording of Mrs. Robinson actually came after the release of The Graduate. All you hear on the soundtracks is a brief excerpt which is clearly different from the final recording.

That said, the best song nominees for that year were bizarre. How could To Sir, With Love, Valley of the Dolls and This is my Song all not be nominated?

reply

The end theme for "Wait Until Dark" was memorable.

reply

Those are my two favorite songs in the movie.

reply

Agreed. "Talk to the Animals" is one of the absolute worst Best Song winners ever. Barbra Streisand who presented the award was visibly disgusted when it won. Nice to see a presenter express honest sentiment when something as awful as that wins.

reply

I think Talk to the Animals is a very witty and melodic song. I just don't think that Rex Harrison sings (talks?) it very well. The version that Peter Pan Records put out (credited to the Peter Pan Chorus and Orchestra but actually sung by Ray Dorey and an unknown female singer) is really nice.

reply

"The Bare Necessities" from "The Jungle Book" is definitively my winner, is so much better tan any Doctor Dolittle song. For a musical this film has very unapealling songs.

Interestingly enough, I agree that this film was a strong candidate to win best song, but not for that song. There are several songs in it which are far better.

To Sir With Love for the win!
