Worst movies to get a best picture nom

This has to be up there. It's not a bad film but nowhere near Best Picture nomination caliber. I enjoyed it a lot more as a kid than I did watching it again fairly recently. This one doesn't hold up too well.

It's pretty bad, but Around the World in Eighty Days, The Prince of Tides, The Hours, Little Miss Sunshine and The Blind Side are worse for starters.

Man, DOCTOR DOOLITTLE was "The Seventh Seal" compared to dreck like GREATEST SHOW ON EARTH.
"May I bone your kipper, Mademoiselle?"

reply

Could of nominated Cool Hand Luke or In Cold Blood.

The utterly forgettable The Turning Point which got 9 nominations total as did Peyton Place a mediocre film from 1957 the same year Kubrick's masterful Paths of Glory was shut out completely. 1962's Mutiny on the Bounty and The Longest Day both bloated, expensive spectacles released by major studios were Best Pic nominees while The Miracle Worker and The Manchurian Candidate weren't nominated in the Best Pic category. Also agree with previous posts that indicated The Prince of Tides and The Blind Side.

Anne of the Thousand Days
The Alamo

reply

Agreed. The Alamo over Spartacus!?
Anne...over They Shoot Horses, Don't They? And don't forget Hello Dolly also an unworthy nominee for Best Pic in 1969.

reply

That just gets my blood boiling. They Shoot Horses not being nominated. It's my fave movie along with Butch Cassidy from 1969
