What's with the drunk Irishman stereotype?

Was that in the original books or was it a product of English-Irish relations in the 60's? They really hammer it home over and over again in a way that doesn't seem relevant to the story.

Name me at time when Anglo-Irish relations were not tense.

In the 60s when the film was made, in the 20s when the books were written, all through the 19th century and back to the 16th and earlier.

Newly wasn't very convincing as an Irishman. However the Irish are hard drinkers. All of my ancestors fit the stereotype. Bless their hearts.

Pipeman: I haven't see the movie, but based on the soundtrack I'd say that Anthony Newley at least did the Irish accent very well.

He wasn't an Irishman in the original books.
