The ending *contains spoliers*

The ending scene with the chick who pretended to be a deceased Joan Hudson. Who the hell was she and did she play a major role earlier in the movie that I didn't catch? I ask this because they zoomed in on her, as if this was someone that Ray Flemming had came in contact with earlier in the film.

I believe this photo is of her, apparently from Ray Flemming's get together earlier in the movie. But I don't remember her or what role she played:

The picture you selected is actually his wife, whom he killed in the beginning. I'm not sure who the "Joan Hudson" stand in was at the end. I think they were just showing Dr. Flemming that they used a double to trick him like he used Joan as his wife's double to trick the stewardess.
Hope this helps,

I've wondered about the ending too. Great explanation, thanks for posting!

Well, the whole reason I asked was because, the woman at the end had a striking resemblance to his wife IMHO, and it kind of threw me off. I could've swore that was the other woman I posted though, because I did a search for her actress and that picture came up.

I saw this on Hallmark yesterday, and I think it's one of the better Columbos.I liked the aggressiveness of the character, but I also liked the mellower, disheveled dectective he later became too.Anyways,I think the significance of the scene was to just show his reaction to falling for the trick he used, using a seemingly convincing double. He saw his mistress at the end of the hallway, very much alive, and he naturally turned to see who the "dead"body was,not having caught a glimpse of her face.I thought she was just an unnamed police woman, and an older one at that, who returned his gaze.

It was a policewoman used as Joan's "dead" double. They zoomed in on her to show she was not Joan, and that Ray had been duped...
