one thing that bothered me was, how did the police figure the killer thief robbed in an apartment penthouse without leaving any traces outside except for the broken window. Spiderman? Or did I miss anything mentioned?

Hehe - good point! when Columbo's there in the daytime, the apartment definately looks out to the top of another tower block!

Correct, I've always wondered that too! Surprisingly, that's not mentioned in the IMDB "goofs".
