What do the simple folk do

why does guenevere start crying during this song?

reply

It was Guenevere's purpose to let them have a respite from Camelot's problems by discussing trivial things. At first, it seems to work as Arthur tries to teach her to whistle. But no amount of fun could make them forget the impending doom that was upon them. As they danced, it became obvious to Guenevere that she couldn't relieve Arthur from the big time stress he was suffering from. After all, she was the main cause of the mounting crisis and when Arthur shakes his head with exasperation, she realized they could never capture the kind of hapiness they had when they were younger. She breaks down.

In the stage version, Guenevere doesn't break down. The song was really meant to provide comic relief, though it was also performed on the second act, just when the Round TAble was about to crumble.

Arthur realizes that Guenevere has been untrue, then she realizes he knows, then she feels bad and starts to cry. I have to admit, one time I got so into this song that when she cried, I cried becaus eit was so sad.
