This is a rather bizarre bit of confusion. The only connection between Camelot the 1961 musical & MacArthur Park the big pop hit from early 1968 is that Richard Harris sang in the 1967 film of Camelot and had the 1968 hit.
MacArthur Park was composed by Jimmy Webb who was, along with Burt Bacharach one of the big up & coming pop composers of the mid-to-late-Sixties.He had had hits with the Fifth Dimension (Up-Up & Away)and Glenn Campbell (Wichita Lineman,Galveston) as well as Harris.
Webb, greatly inspired by the Beatles and the general zeitgeist of the 1967-1969 Era,wanted to take pop songs to a new level of ambition and complexity. To this end he associated himself with Richard Harris, whose wonderfully evocative style of talk-singing was perfect for this experiment. They put out two conceipt albums - A Tramp Shining and The Yard Went On Forever. Both were lushly scored by a large studio orchestra and were heavily influenced by film scores.MacArthur Park was the only big hit they produced though Didn't We became a part of Streisand's repertoire and Mark Lindasy had a minor hit with one of The Hymns From Grand Terrace.
If you like Harris's singing style in Camelot as much as I do these albums are worth checking out. They are definately unique gems of the Sixties, however forgotten they are now. They are(were?I'm not sure about whether still in print)available on a single CD on the Raven Label called THe Webb Sessions.Check it out!
