Differences between soundtrack + movie

Does anyone know why the soundtrack version of "I Wonder What The King Is Doing Tonight" is so different from the version in the movie? I can see how cutting out some of the pauses (and the wind effects) might have made sense for the purposes of the LP, but the entire vocal sounds redone, and not in a positive way; it's far less dramatic and powerful on the CD.

Maybe there'll be a deluxe version someday...

Richard Harris insisted on recording the vocal live in front of the camera (as Rex Harrison had done on all of his vocals for the My Fair Lady movie) rather than miming to the playback of a pre-recording, which is the usual procedure. The soundtrack version was meant to be more acceptable for repeated listening, though obviously there is disagreement.

The same thing happened with Natalie Wood's "Little Lamb" in Gypsy. The vocal we hear in the movie was recorded on the set, but the vocal on the LP was recorded specifically for home listening. (The current CD release of the Gypsy soundtrack restores the film vocal.)

Someday is here!

Wow; thanks for the link! :D

Do you happen to know if the LP/CD soundtrack for My Fair Lady is also different from the movie soundtrack?

My memory is that the tracks used on the LP were largely the tracks used in the film, except that (as usual) the LP is missing a lot of the dance music and all the reprises. The most recent CD version includes additional music taken directly from the soundtrack of the film.

If I recall correctly, another difference is that the LP version of "Just You Wait" is a solo for Eliza (like the stage version), whereas the movie has an actor speaking some or all of the Imaginary King's lines. (It's been a while since I last saw the movie, so I might be misremembering this?)

Yes, the king does sing. I just watched the video of it. I love that song. :)

The LP of My Fair Lady also excludes the song of Higgins' servants, "Poor Professor Higgins," and the beautiful waltz at The Embassy Ball.
