Really, what did Buck think that mattress was going to do? He probably would have stood a better chance if he just took off running and shooting for the car.

Good point. I think in the heat of the events of the gun battle, whether historical or not in regards to that mattress, he just acted on instinct. Blind instinct? Yes....but I think it provided him a better cover than just openly running and shooting. They were surrounded, it was better than nothing.. :-)

I seem to remember seeing the mattress absorb a few gun shots but that's neither here nor there. The end result most likely wouldn't have changed either way. Anyway you look at it, you're correct. It was pretty dumb on his part considering how cumbersome the mattress was. He was a dead man the second he slowly lumbered outside with it.
