I happen to think Parsons is marvelous, and fits right in with the comic adventure tone of the first part of the movie. As for her character, she clearly is not in favor of the murder and mayhem at first, but comes to enjoy being part of the "fun". She's as much an idiot as the others.
About the Oscar: Never forget that winners are often chosen because voters are avoiding other choices. Parsons was surrounded by nominations for comedy (Carol Channing and Mildred Natwick). Comic performances rarely win Oscars. Then there was the ingenue that most people found stiff and weakly acdted (Katherine Ross in THE GRADUATE), and a well meaning nod to a veteran actress, Beah Richards, for playing Sidney Poitier's dignified mother in GUESS WHO'S COMING TO DINNER.
That leaves Parsons, whose originality and fearlessness are admirable. Also remember that none of the other actors in BONNIE & CLYDE won. Parsons was the stand in for the full team.
