I would LOVE to see a true shakespearian remake with Kenneth Branagh directing. No one else seems to be able to understand shakespeare like he does.
I'd love to see Kate Winslet as Katherine and maybe either Russell Crowe or Rufus Sewell as Petruchio. Perhaps Ramola Garai or Bryce Dallas Howard as Bianca and Eddie Redmayne as Luciento. Maybe Ben Kingsley or Ian McKellen as Baptista.
Hmmmmm. Don't get me wrong, I love Kate Winslet... but I'm not sure I see her with the proper anger and bitterness for Kat. Angelina Jolie in her younger days may have worked. Russell Crowe on the other hand I could possibly see, he's aloof and haughty enough!
You took the words right out of my mouth with the "ideal" casting pchic and if she were a bit younger, then I would have cast Emma Thompson as Catherina. Petruchio is not supposed to be haughty & aloof, but a lusty swaggerer and I can certainly see Russell Crowe in the part. Alternately I would cast Ewan Macgregor as Lucentio and Keira Knightly as Bianca. Another poster mentioned Angelina Jolie and I'm sure she'd do a credible job as Catherina, but we need an actress whose portrayal can transcend her Hollywood glamour icon image.
Yep, Rufus Sewell would make a good male lead, Charlie Sheen could be another candidate, but Russell Crowe was born to play Petruchio.
Just as the male lead has to have more than a hint of Petruchio in his real life character, so should the female lead have a bit of Kate in her. So while Angelina Jolie would have been perfect when she was younger, she is a bit 'mature aged' for the role of a young woman now. So can I suggest Lindsay Lohan? When she manages to stay off illicit substances, LiLo is a quite talented actress.
Rufus Sewell would indeed make a good Petruchio, as would Russell Crowe. Beyond that one must question not only your judgement, but your sanity. Angelina Jolie might be depressingly adequate, but Charlie Sheen and Lindsay Lohan??? Possibly you have a secret hatred for Shakespeare. I can think of no other reason why you would suggest such hysterically inappropriate actors for these lead roles. Maybe you would like an all Black version starring Jimmie Walker and LaWanda Page. Possibly a version with Pauly Shore and Carmen Electra. Maybe a cartoon version starring Bugs Bunny in both roles.....which, with Mel Blanc's vocal talents, would be far superior to a Sheen/Lohan version. In any case, I doubt that either Sheen or Lohan could stay out of prison long enough to make the film....Sheen for drugs, Lohan for criminal lack of talent. Btw, have you seen her latest film, "Liz And Dick", in which she hilariously embarrasses herself playing Elizabeth Taylor? Taylor's dandruff had more talent and class than Lohan.
Fair enough Nemesis, I'll admit that I was trying to throw a cat amongst the pigeons by suggesting Sheen and Lohan, But I thought it would be obvious that I was trying to be a bit provocative.
Of course you're welcome to disparage other people's suggestions, but which modern actress do you think has the spirit to play Kate convincingly? Surely NOT one of the current crop of talented 'ice queens' like Cate Blanchett et. al.?
