Jane was miscast, needed an actress like Goldie Hawn
I love Jane Fonda, for decades. But I've always thought she was horribly miscast in this role. She did a fine acting job, no problems with her on that. But Jane's comedy is more layered and intelligent/serious. I loved her as Cat Ballou, hysterical, no problem. But in BitP she just played a dizzy, silly, unstable character that I don't think fit her personality/abilities. What the movie needed was a Corie played by an actress like Goldie Hawn, a dizzy flighty unserious comedienne. I might have been more willing to tolerate the character Corie if she was never to be taken seriously. And part of the humor would be that a mature and disciplined Redford would realize the mistake he made marrying her so quickly. Jane's character just seemed mentally ill. Someone like Goldie would have made Corie's antics more endearing and less troubling to the audience. Does anyone agree?
