I think Ethel's advice she gives to Corrie is true for couples in the real world. Sacrifing a bit of yourself for your spouse. "Make him feel important," she says, "and you'll have a wonderful and happy marriage, like 2 out of 10 couples". I am not married, but I have a friend who is, and I have thought about giving this delightful movie to her, since she is also a newlywed living in an apartment. The odds for a happy marriage I think seem to be the same as today! And doesn't it sound a bit bleak whenever you hear that line? 2 out of 10?

I love older movies and was so glad to find this on the TV today. It is one of my faves. If you are looking for a good romance with come comedy bits, watch "The Quiet Man" starring John Wayne, Maureen O'Hara, and our very own Ethel! She has some good lines in that movie too.

I know I love her advice. You really do have to sacrifice just a bit when you love someone... SIgh.. This is such a sweet romantic film. I sent the cheesiest romantic message to my boyfriend after it!! HAH!!!

I would have to applaud Mother Ethel's sound advice to her daughter about sacrificing a bit of yourself for your spouse. I've been married for nearly a quarter of a century myself, and think this movie would make a terrific gift for any pair of newlyweds. The scenarios may be exaggerated rather than realistic, but there are many elements of truth depicted and the movie so amusingly brings to light that old saying "The honeymoon is over". Ethel's advice would serve both newlyweds and long married couples well.

I loved Mother Ethel in this movie - hers was my favourite role. I had forgotten about Mildred Natwick (Ethel) being in The Quiet Man as it's been awhile but yes, that is another delightful classic.
