When Redford first arrives . . . .

. . . . at the apartment, he gets out of a cab with his suitcase and begins going up the stoop to enter the building. At the same time, a young man & woman come out of the building and walk down the stoop, during which Redford stares at them as if they just stepped out of a flying saucer from Mars (when in fact all they did was step out of the building). Why?

The young man & woman never show up in the movie again, but this confused me, because the attention Redford's character gave them in this scene suggested they were going to re-enter the plot at some point, but they never do.

Can anyone explain?

The apartment buulding is full of weirdos. There's the guy with all the empty tuna fish cans outside his door who hasn't left his apt in 3 years, the guy who peers at Redford through the blinds, the woman who pulls the policeman into her apartment... When Redford comes back from the liquor store he says how he just learned about all these crazy people in their building from the guy who works there. He mentions how he heard there was one couple living there of the same sex but no one knows which sex that is...that was probably the couple he stared at earlier coming out of the building as he was going in.

Their unisex appearance. It has its roots in the Sixties.
