An Amazing Series!!! Best Jazzy Music Ever!

Spiderman had some of the best background music ever! The composers at the time did an incredible job ...there will never again be this type of memorable music in a cartoon. Spiderman was very entertaining albiet a little formalic...and holds up well even today.

I am referring mainly to the first season which I fondly recall - which were somewhat faithful to the comic books. I did not like the last two seasons, where I remember that even as a child I knew the production values of the 2nd and 3rd season really stunk and something radical had happened!!! Those were the ones with trippy black, purple and green backgrounds, bizarre invasion of the underworld stories...and endless, I mean endless repeats of Spidey swinging again and again past the same building - *** note to Ralph Bakshi, - those were pure *beep* Ralph!!!(who would later become know for animating Lord of the Rings). I remember reading an article where Ralph admits that because of budget limitations, if he had two minutes left in the show, he would just "keep that son-of-a-bitch swinging" haha!

Anyhow I always watched faithfully and cheered whenever the series cycled back into the first season. I must have watched this series several dozen times growing up!

Here is my recommendation...watch the first season episodes - you tell by the clear blue starry skies. If you happen across an episode with bizzare lighting, black, yellow, crimson, green skies ...best to avoid this sixties acid trip!!!

hot wheels,

Its great to hear from a fellow knowledgable fan! You are absolutely right about the music...I got too caught up with the animation to really express myself. The second and third seasons were very lively and different (were these the ones borrowed from the Fugitive?)

I've been to your website! My initial comments were really about your swing cues. All your clips are fantastic!!! Thank you so much for taking the trouble to sift through those. I have seen the series from start to finish dozens of times.

I remember that I always thought the harbor series (2&3) were made first (because of the poor production values) and that season 1 were newer because they got better technology! haha. I was able to identify during the opening credits which season was being shown...if Spidey skipped slightly on the opening swing, it was the harbour series, if Spidey was smooth, it was the City Series.

Do you think we were damaged as children watching those hellish scenes of spidey and that bizarre dragon fly door in the centre of the earth. Or what about those vines that would sniff at Spidey as he swung past the Buddha statues endlessly.

By in large you are right, due to limited resources, production crew had to be more inventive and imaginative. But come on, Spidey traveled to the center of the dark underworld no less than 3 times! Very trippy stuff.

The Fifth Dimension truly freaked me out! I remember when I first saw it, I was really confused why Rocket Robin Hood had the same episode. And the bizarre perspectives and disturbing shading. Its true, this can be seen as more "interesting" as you put it, but some episodes like "Vine" or
"Blotto" were pretty weird and poorly done!

What are your favorite episodes?

hot wheels,

Your site is marvelous...I thought I was a huge fan but you've taken it to a whole new level!

Maybe in time I will come to appreciate the later episodes as much as you do...I'm glad we can agree that the music is truly outstanding and one of a kind!

I picked up the DVD box set, just after it's release. I had totally forgotten how "cool" the music was, from the last two seasons. While watching "Kingpined", I was taken aback by a certain piece of music. It is the music played when Spider-Man first makes his appearence to the Kingpin (and good ol' J. Jonah Jameson). To me, that is the best piece of all of those that are used. I have tried to do some research on it, in order to find the actual music. The only name that comes up is Freddie McCoy. I have heard that piece of music (the one mentioned above) used elsewhere. Thing is, no one can tell me anything about it. Would you (or anyone else out there) have a clue as to where to find this "original" music?

BTW, I did check out your site, and I did enjoy the time spent there ^^.

The members of the SPIDEY-JAZZ yahoo group have done a ton of research into the music, and we're currently trading 3 whole CDs worth of music. Check out the group!
