Any other reccomendations?

I don't know about any racing animes from the same time period, but there was an animated show called Clutch Cargo which my parents have described as "one of the worst kid shows ever". I've found a VHS tape of it before, but I don't know if it's available on DVD.

If you'd want to check out any racing animes from today, there's stuff like Initial D.

Racing has never been a major theme for anime series. Mach GoGoGo was pretty much it until 1976, when Machine Hayabusa came along, followed in 1977 by Grand Prix Hawk, Gattiger, Machine Hiryu, and Rubenkaiser. After that brief flurry, the field was virtaully ignored once again until 1984, which brought us Mechadoc and Twin Hawks, then F in 1988. From there, racing anime series have become a bit more common, hapening every couple of years with productions like Cyber Formula, the aforementioned Initial D, and the remake of Mach GoGoGo, but it has never been a mainstay.
