Mannix vs Hawaii 5-0
I did not watch the first run being I was born in 1971. I was wondering which show was the better one. Both have really great theme songs.

shareBoth are great shows and I wouldn't compare them. One show is about cops and the other is about a private investigator. Mannix would be better compared to a show like the Rockford Files or Magnum PI.
Yea...Mannix is more character-driven; H 5-0 more plot-driven. Mannix more "personal"; H 5-0 more impersonal. My own preference is H 5-0...I actually find it more entertaining--but that's probably just my taste. I've had both up-to-date on DVD; waiting for season 11 of H 5-0. Seems to take forever.
I watch alotta TV...but that doesn't mean I don't have a job.
Mannix will return after station identification.
shareStrictly speaking on a musical level, both Mannix and Five-O could boast tremendous themes but also amazing musical underscore. Whether it was jazzy rhythms, "Mod" organs and early electronic dissonances, both programs had a stable of composers that was truly remarkable. Mannix had Lalo Schifrin; Jerry Fielding; George Duning; Richard Markowitz; and Robert Drasinin. Hawaii Five-O had Morton Stevens; Richard Shores; Bruce Broughton; and Don B. Ray all of whom combined to create a musical soundscape that made the late '60s and early '70s so interesting.
Consilio et prudentia
Personal and impersonal? Most definitely these 2 shows are what you described to a tee. But if you want both of these qualities in a 1960's TV show watch Ironside with Raymond Burr. I liked all three of these shoes at age 12-13. They have not lost their watch-ability over time. I still enjoy them 40 years later. And Hawaii Five-O has the number one song hands down. Mannix is a close second. #3 is Mission Impossible. #4 Their creepy and their kooky The Addams Family!!!
shareHello Everyone,
I was born in 1951 so I have 20 years on you. I really liked growing up when I did (Wilkes-Barre, PA) during a time where we only had three UHF channels each for one of the 3 networks. There was also Channel 44 which was PBS but then called, "EDU-TV" we only said we watched that. It's amazing that when there were three channels there was always something to watch. I agree with Nic. hse that a comparison between HAWAII FIVE-0 and MANNIX is apples and oranges. I absolutely love both shows. In fact I am taking a break before I watch the last episode of season 4 in a few minutes. I have season 5 right next to me. BTW, season 11 of HF-0 will be released finally, on September 20, 2011. I wonder if they were building up the suspense by delaying it o long. All that is is annoying! Season 11 will be the last season with the full cast, even "Dann-o" James MacArthur in it. They tried to re-boot the show for season 12. I can't believe that that was 30 years ago! I don't remember that much about it except it had Big Bill Smith on the force.
MANNIX lasted 8 seasons but could have lasted longer. In fact it had pulled itself up to number 18 in the ratings when it was cancelled. That's still a mystery to me. Mike Connors returned in the 80s with TODAY'S FBI but it only lasted one season.
Just a note to pacwarbuff, excellent point about the musical talent behind both shows but please not forget the great KENYON HOPKINS (themes to EAST SIDE-WEST SIDE & MR BUDDWING among others) especially for all the music editing for MANNIX!
I sure enjoyed reading all your posts. Sorry this was so long.

I like them both equally and buy the DVDs as soon as they are available. Mannix was followed by HFO on Saturday nights and I still watch them in that order.
Why ain't you at the garden party you heathen?
I was born in 1970 so I only have vague memories of both shows. However, I've become a big fan of 70's programming since it was such a fun period for me & so many shows are in DVD. The beauty of that period is the variety of crime dramas. Today shows are really similar. Back then however, each show brought something different. You can't go wrong with either Mannix or Hawaii Five -O. Great shows! Same with Kojak, Streets of San Francisco, Police Story, Adam-12, Dragnet, The Rookies, SWAT, Police Woman or Starsky Hutch. I have seasons of all & really enjoy them. Not just because of nostalgia either!
