Bare breast in Season 3's 'The Sound of Darkness'!

While watching Season 3 on DVD last night, I literally couldn't believe my eyes.

In "The Sound of Darkness" (the second episode on Season 3 Disc 3), there's a scene in which Mannix and Peggy are walking along the beach. In the foreground at one point is a lovely young female sunbather who's lying flat on her back, wearing a red bikini. Only she's not completely wearing it. There must have been a wardrobe malfunction, as the bikini is partially pulled down and her left breast is totally exposed. The camera pans admiringly across it from right to left, as Mannix and Peggy walk by in the background.

At first I thought, no way, it's just an illusion. The bikini probably just fit really tight and it must have squeezed the middle of the breast so it bulged up like that. But I ran the scene back and examined it more closely, and on my 47" screen you could definitely tell it was the whole breast. You could even see the aureole and nipple.

Wow. Was this actually broadcast on network TV in 1969? The production crew certainly must have noticed while they were filming it. Did they shoot an alternate version? Was the network censor napping when he passed this?

Here's a link to a screen capture from the show:

Gregory,

I saw it, too but, also realized something. Back in '69, I'm sure people weren't looking for something like this and there weren't Tivo or VCR's/DVD's that could capture it and allow us to look for it again and again.

I'm sure there was no alternate version and, anyway, maybe most people were tripped out then and never noticed it at all or thought it was 'groovy'! That is a good episode, though!

Your screen capture is inconclusive -it looks like any generic glimpse of topless shot in a hundred Something Weird Video reissues of "adults only" soft porn movies from the late 1960s. The lack of definition in the screen capture plus the "fleeting moment" aspect mastbradped alludes to means this was no big deal in 1969.

I was introduced to "adults only" movies back at that time in the form of Russ Meyer films, specifically Finders Keepers, Lovers Weepers and later on Vixen. But you are right -this was verboten on American tv. We did get to see plenty of BBC-produced nude shots in shows like Elizabeth R, and Public Broadcasting also delivered the never-to-be-forgotten Valerie Perrine nudity in Steambath in 1973. It is an irony that pay-cable, stupidly not subject to the same rules as broadcast tv (thank our easily corrupted congressmen for that loophole), now insists on including nudity in every stinking series and every overrated award-winning one, too (Sopranos, etc.).

Anyway I congratulate you on your eagle-eyed catch. If it were just more blatant (I guess nipples standing out on the order of Playboy's Kathy Shower would do), this would be groundbreaking. In any event, tv has survived with the bait-and-switch approach, reaching its zenith in the mid-1970s, of "see-through" cheesecake shots, notably the late Farrah Fawcett's famous work on Charlie's Angels -no nudity, but better. As a kid, Sophia Loren's famous clinging see-through clothing when she emerges from the ocean in Boy on a Dolphin (plus a poster for sale, pre-Farrah; see the IMDb gallery showing the shot in a b&w version that doesn't do it justice) had me watching whenever that great Fox movie was broadcast, and nobody got into a puritanical censorship mood.

After a close examination, I think you are right. It somehow slipped by the censors.

Having just seen "The Sound of Darkness" today, I agree that while it may have been a "wardrobe malfunction," it clearly didn't trouble the producers enough to go back to edit the shot. Many people in 1969 still had black and white televisions, and even in color, the orange bikini top makes the fleeting glimpse hard to detect. During the scene, Joe and Peggy are walking on the beach from right to left across the screen, and the camera is following them as they walk. The audience's attention was directed at them, and the pan over the sunbathers is pretty quick. And as someone else pointed out, without VCRs or similar technology, home viewers would have had no chance to pause, reverse, or go back over the scene. But having said that, kudos to the person who caught this -- I agree that it appears to be something that slipped past the censors, though it's about the mildest such mistake that someone could have made at the time.

How funny that Peggy looks like she's wearing her usual turtleneck and Mannix is wearing a jacket while the sunbather is baring it.

Why ain't you at the garden party you heathen?

reply

that was quite a catch.

Certainly not clear enough to determine if there's any more than just some excessive cleavage, no clear evidence of anything inappropriate exposed.

Quite the catch though.

obviously watching the Mannix Marathon today on CLOO... This episode is on at 9pm tonight according to CLOO website.. The TWC online guide shows a different episode ... Since CLOO cuts episodes to add more commercials, I will be curious if the scene is dropped...

34 minute mark on CLOO... it sure looked like a model who was getting a "little extra" sun!!! I wonder if they did it to see if they could sneak it through... as someone above posted, in the days before recordings and big screen TV's, it would be pretty unnoticed... the focus of people watching on 19" to maybe 25" TV's would be on Joe and Peggy... Only today's technology would even pick it up.... Censors back then were mostly looking at language etc... I doubt even censors would be looking for it...

ah yes... different times then. i just happened upon that CLOO Mannix marathon and I thought I'd died and gone to heaven... break out the nestle's quik... make sure my homework was done! .. clean my room! it's Mannix night. unbelievable stuff. I recorded 9 episodes on the DVR and just enjoyed.. what a difference 35 years makes. really liked this episode too and the difference between Mission and Mannix in how the characters related. if they'd put on an episode of Room 222 I think I'd have slipped into a 70s flashback and started looking for my spindle stack of 45s!!!

I'm surprised that the network didn't censor it. For CBS Television executives in 1969 it was a daring and controversial move.

Yes, I viewed it on my Mannix complete series DVD and it is so funny! Obviously, the girl bared her breast on purpose, leaving the orange bikini top jut below her left breast. The camera man was in on it as she was the focus of the slow pan with Mannix and Peggy walking in the background. The extra who played her boyfriend is lying next to her on the sand and you can tell by the position of the back of his head that he's staring at her boob. LOL

I'm glad the exposure was apparently missed. This is the kind of realism we hope for!
