When this show was first on Network TV, I watched it every week. However I have not seen it since it was cancelled. For some reason I don't recall it ever being shown in syndication after it was cancelled on any local NYC channels. I am sure this show had enough episodes to make it worth being shown in reruns. Am I correct in saying this show was never shown in reruns on NYC TV or did I some how miss it in syndication?
You're not the only one. I don't remember seeing Mannix ever shown in reruns on NYC TV stations either. I became aware of the show when it aired on cable. I don't think you missed it.
Than perhaps I am right.Perhaps someday when I have an afternoon to kill, I'll to the library and look through some old news papers at the TV section. Thanks for your response.
I don't think it was ever shown either. I use to come home and watch the reruns when I came home from school. Channel 9 used to show those one hour police dramas like:Hawaii five-0 ,Barnaby jones, rookies and SWAT. Channel 5 showed Adam 12, Columbo, MacMillan and wife.
Maybe the show was not picked up in the new york market because it was considered too violent for its time. I understand that that is the reason why SWAT was cancelled.
I don't think it had anything to do with the violence, I guesse it just never got picked up by a New York station when it went into syndication. I recall seeing Mike Conners on something a few years after MANNIX went off and I recall at time wondering why no one was showing reruns of MANNIX.
Looking back at NYC local tv in the 70s, WOR 9 would've been the station, if any, to air this show in syndication, and I think it did, though I can't say so with 100% certainty. A book on detective TV shows stated that it did air on late night on one of the major networks in the 1975-76 season (which is why it was cancelled- at that time it was very odd for a show to run both in reruns and in first run, so CBS cancelled it, although it was in the top 20 at the time).
I'll weigh in and say I too am all but positive it never aired in the NYC area, at least between 1975 and 1994 when I lived on Long Island. It's funny that Rockford Files was a staple, but not fellow left-coast PI Mannix.
I thought it very insightful that you pegged Channel 9 as the likely place this would have aired. It does have that Channel 9 feel to it, something that might have come on after Joe Franklin at 2 in the morning. But I was up at a lot of those hours--watching primarily WPIX (Odd Couple, Honeymooners, Trek, Barney Miller, et al.) and I know I would have caught and become hooked on Mannix had I ever seen it.
PS: A couple other 1960s classics I've discovered on DVD that I never remember seeing on NYC reruns are Wild, Wild West and I Spy. We wuz robbed.
"Mannix" WAS on Channel 9 NYC around 1980-81. It wasn't for very long.
It aired on ABC nationally opposite Carson along with TV movies and other off-network detective shows on a rotating or weekly basis. I'm about 90% sure it aired on Channel 9 NYC around 1980-81 but it couldn't have been for very long. I'll go into Newsday's archives because I seem to remember Marvin Kitman writing something about it at the time.
After that, "Mannix" aired on Nick at Nite for about 5 years but most people on this board remember that.

Correct. That's when I started watching it as a teenager, since I was too young to watch it when it was on CBS (though I did catch a couple of them during that time).
