Oh my wooooord!

I finally located a copy of this wonderful series, having only watched the remake series. While I thoroughly enjoyed the new series, I could never understand the appeal of Gina McKee's Irene. She was far too dry, too cold, too passionless. She in no way did justice to the Irene of the novel, with men practically shooting themselves for her favor. But this Irene... I understand now. She is so charismatic, passionate, and lives up to the character to a T.

My only complaint is the actress who plays Helene is TERRIBLE. Why do they always make her cry if she's so horrible at it?

PS Eric Porter is adorable.

I agree with you 100% about the contrast between the two Irenes (Gina McKee's and Nyree Dawn Porter's.) Nyree Dawn looked exactly right for the part whereas Gina, though a good actress, didn't. Gina, I think, was woefully miscast. Also Nyree Dawn Porter managed to capture that mysterious, elusive, passive-aggressive quality of Irene that you see in the books.

IMO the 1967 Forsyte Saga is, in every way, better and much more faithful to the books than the more recent version. The new show tried to re-write and modernize Galsworthy, which wasn't a smart move. Galsworthy won a Nobel Prize for Literature, so why the need to change ANYTHING? Producers of the 1967 show had the sense to adhere to the original storyline, which is why it worked so magnificently well.
