i too was obsessed with this incredible series when i first watched it on pbs in the 70's i loved all the characters and it was sad when all the old aunts and uncles had gone. i remember a scene towards the end of the series where soames and winifred look at a photo of all their long deceased relatives and he says 'what have we gained what have we lost?'
