At the end of the episode "Encounter" (about halfway through), Fleur says goodbye to young Jolyon (Jon) as he is about to leave for his tour of Italy/Spain with Irene. This farewell takes place on a wooden bridge over the river and is supposed to be close to Mapledurham.
Does anyone know where this was filmed? There doesn't seem to be a similar bridge in the locality.
The bridge is near Henley-on-Thames. I stood on it when visiting friends in England in the 1970's, and have never forgotten it. By the way, the house at Robin Hill, which appears so far from the road, is right against a small road, also nearby.
Many thanks, Jack, I had almost given up on finding anyone who knew where this was! Are you able to be a bit more precise? Google Earth shows some bridges to the South of Henley at Marsh Lock. Is this where it is? Thanks again.
Other footbridge possibilities near Henley-on-Thames are Hurley (put SL6 5NE into Google Maps/Earth) and Hambledon Mill. Are either of these the right one? Many thanks. Robert
I think you are the only person in the world who knows where this bridge is. Are you able to be a bit more precise as to its location? e.g. is it north or south of Henley? And, how far away?
Exactly! Though bridges are mentioned in passing, such as by Soames during the General Strike, as he travels up to London to "protect" Fleur, there are no others, except perhaps the one he crosses (I THINK) during a walk near the locks. But that is an insignificant scene, geographically.
There ARE no bridges mentioned in The Forsyte Saga, for foot traffic, that I can recall.
Even Michael, for all of his lustful ardor toward Fleur, takes a skiff from Pangbourne to her house at Mapledurham. Maybe he's being "romantic"--who knows?
Only the Hammersmith, Richmond and Putney bridges are mentioned with any regularity, and those are just for coming and going, mostly from Robin Hill to London. If there is a bridge near Henley, then it is left out of the original book.
The bridge I am referring to is in the first BBC production of The Forsyte Saga, not the book. It shows Fleur and Jon parting on a long white wooden footbridge - it must have been filmed somewhere but I can't track it down!
Isn't it near a large golf course? There's even a neighbourhood that has a "Soames Walk" in it!
As for the bridge...remember that in the book, Fleur and Jon parted on the towpath, not on a bridge, and Fleur continued on to Mapledurham. Then, along comes Michael in a skiff to "fetch" her, much to her annoyance!
Brilliant. I have been looking for this ever since I bought the DVD set of the Forsyte Saga in 2010, having been an avid viewer in 1966/67. I will visit when I am next down in the south of England from York. Very many thanks.
You're mighty welcome! Glad you were still around and now have your answer. Marsh Lock's really very lovely. I think I'll go back there, too, the next time I'm across the pond...
