music

In an early scene, there is a music box playing in the background. It sounds like it's playing the theme music from Truffaut's Les quatre cents coups (The 400 Blows)! It's pretty unmistakable. Anyone know why?

Probably a tribute. The film, like many others of that era (Walking the Streets of Moscow, I Am Twenty, My Yonger Brother), was inspired by the European New Wave movement. The period is usually called simply "the 60s" and indicates films with unclear narrative and "heroes of our time" seeking freedom and purpose in life. Shepitko also directed You and Me (1971) with a similar style before turning to WWII.
