After Sister Liguori dies, Mother Superior breaks down in her chambers and says something to the effect of "There will be no more races at Pimlico, Liguori." I don't have a copy of the movie and I'm trying to remember the exact quote. Can anyone help out? It would be greatly appreciated.
Mother Superior and Sister Ligouri's family were in the chapel with the casket. Mother Superior walks the family (a man and a woman) to the chapel door. Mother Superior goes to the head of the casket, puts her arms on each side of the casket and says "Well Ligouri, this is the last race at Pimlico" and then breaks down.
Oh, yes, indeed, she was spying on her. When Mary saw the depth of her dedication to the fallen sister, it resonated in her how human and compassionate the Mother Superior really was. Remember that Mary had only recently discovered that the "flawless beauty" nun had volunteered to help the leper children. Mary was maturing spiritually and emotionally. She was getting an inside peek of what her life could become if she make the committment.
"When you throw dirt, you lose ground" --old proverb
Let's just say that she was deeply curious about learning more of the Mother Superior's true reaction of the passing of a dear friend. Whether she was spying or observing or planning to spend some time with Mother Superior. The point was clear. I think we can safely assume there was nothing malicious about her observation of the woman she came to admire and emulate.
What a great movie. I don't understand why the comcast star system gives it a 2 (fair). It's very entertaining, touching at times, and stars one of the greatest actors of all time - R.R.!!! She's always been my Girl Friday too. She was the best.
