Why San Quentin?

When Reverend Mother was discussing possible expulsion for the two girls with Mary's uncle and Rachel's father, why did she mention the two girls as "candidates for San Quentin" if the movie setting was suppose to be in Pennsylvania? San Quentin is a California state prison. I've always wondered about this. Replies, opinions?

I know the movie was partially filmed in PA but I don't recall anything in the movie that stated that St. Francisville was in PA. (Although being from PA - I recognized some scenes). Anyway, back then I recall San Quentin as being one of the biggest and toughest prisons around. I suppose that may be why Reverend Mother would consider them to be candidates.

Whoever wrote the screenplay may have been from California, and San Quentin may have just come to mind. Also, in the 60's, San Quentin was considered the epitome of tough prisons and most everyone around the country used it as an example of the worst place to be sent.

DUH!

When I'm asked to name a prison, I think 'San Quentin'. 'Alcatraz'. 'Sing Sing'. Those are practically synonyms for prisons.

Suppose she'd said in the movie 'you two are candidates for Waymark'. A prison in Pennsylvania.

Then I suppose we'd get a question here about what-is-Waymark and why-would-they-say-Waymark-instead-of-San Quentin....

DUH!
