Rosalind and Hayley?

Since I read this on Wikipedia, I'm doubting it's authenticity but is there any truth to Rosalind Russell and Hayley Mills not getting along during the film?

Hi, Maybe this book excerpt will shed some light on your question. Roz writes in her autobiography, "Life is a Banquet": "...I worked with Hayley Mills...she used to stick out her tongue whenever I passed (she couldn't stand me)and she was bursting at the seams with repressed sexuality. She was eighteen or nineteen and Disney kept hiring her to play children's parts. Her talent was enormous, but it was only a question of time when she would break out....Hayley will be all right though. She's bright...."

Oh okay. I wonder why Hayley didn't like her?

Hard to say! By all accounts from many Hollywood actors, Roz Russell was the consummate professional and fun to work with. Ann Jillian who played Dainty June in "Gypsy" (Roz played her mother, Mama Rose) wrote an article a few years back on thecolumnists.com and spoke glowingly of working with Roz. I have also read that Roz was considerate and kind to her costars. I wonder if Hayley was just "acting out" a bit, perhaps due to her frustrations in continuing to be cast in adolescent roles when indeed she was much older.

Maybe Hayley was just staying in character!

I doubt Roz would lie; and if you can get a copy of her autobiography, quoted above, it's marvelous reading. Roz was not mad at Haley--she merely pointed out that they didn't get along. I think Roz was probably right on the money about Haley being unhappy with the role. She was 19/20, it was her first non-Disney role, and she gets practically the same thing as the Disney roles! Easy to understand the frustration, and I think Roz did.

The next year Haley made some huge changes in her life, making movies like "The Family Way" which is a sweet movie, but nothing like Pollyanna!

I like them both; it's not anything to take sides over.

As you say... perhaps she was staying in character and since Roz was getting on in years maybe she just misunderstood what was happening. Anyway, there's a link here to an interview this one guy did with Hayley Mills and he asks her about the whole Rosalind Russell thing during the interview and this appeared to come as quite a surprise to Hayley. Here's an excerpt from the article in which the interview took place.

In her autobiography, "Life is a Banquet", Russel intimated 20-year old Hayley
(with whom she co-starred in THE TROUBLE WITH ANGELS) had been an hors
d'oeuvre who gave her indigestion: "another overripe adolescent... demon. She
used to stick out her tongue whenever I passed... bursting at the seams with
repressed sexuality." Having never heard of the book, Hayley seemed genuinely
dismayed. "I was always rather in awe of Miss Russell. It wasn't as if we
became great mates, but I honestly can't remember a time when we had any
trouble. She was treated with enormous respect by everyone."

So yeah, I'd chalk it up to misunderstanding. Roz probably didn't quite understand what she was doing and Hayley, in that article, mentioned that during adolescence she was having some issues so maybe it was a combination of some adolescent anxieties and being unfamiliar with her acting style. Roz and Hayley don't seem like the "jerky celebrity" types. Even if they really didn't like each other though, TTWA is still one of the best movies EVER.

Looking back, I'm sure Hayley regrets her unkind treatment of Roz. A lot of us commit youthful indescretions. Roz is one wise gal. I love that woman.

TooSlim, that's exactly what I thought when I read this.

I heard that too. I would hate to believe it was true because I love both these ladies and it would be a shame if they didn't get along. They both seemed like a lot of fun to be around. They're two of my favorite actresses of all time.

Where's the fire?

~ WOW!..That's hard to except since these 2 ladies performances in the movie complemented eachother.
