In the smoking scene when they hear the fire engines and Rachel asks if they should go see what is going on, Hayley Mills answers: "I've been giving that some thought." Mother Superior introducing the nuns and she has just one word after she says the name of one particular nun: "Art". The scene in front of the fireplace with Sr. Ligouri and Mother Superior says: "Well, if you would have made book on it, Sister, you would have been taken to the laundry" and Sr. Ligouri replies, "To the cleaners, Mother". When Hayley Mills asks Mother Superior how she could have given up a career as a fashion designer/seamstress and Mother Superior says, "I found something better". Love the other quotes already posted, too!

I feel the first time Mills was questioning her beliefs was when she said about Mother Superior "I HATE her." Meaning quite the opposite. She was always watching her, in chapel, through the window, there are many clues to Mary Clancy's decision in the film.

On the train: old lady to Mills: "A child YOUR age smoking!! Mills -- "I'm not a child, I'm a midget with bad habits." GOLD!

Russel to Mills, after the fire. "It seems that one of us should go. But I guarantee you -- it won't be me."

Also after the same calamity. Russel comes out and yells "POTS!! From now to the end of the term. AND a thousand word essay, double spaced, on "The Evils of Smoking.............and why I gave it up!"

This movie is my favorite of Mills, but I should see more. Just bought the DVD and it's sequel, which cannot measure up at all.

Is there something in the water? I just got this movie, a childhood favorite, on DVD, and have been enjoying hearing all of my old favorite quotes!

How can anybody forget the new band uniforms?

MOTHER SUPERIOR: ...This is a Catholic school, Mr. Gottschalk!
MR. GOTTSCHALK: Band uniforms are non-sectarian!

And Mother Superior's smackdown of Mr. Petrie, the progressive schoolmaster, is always good fun.

"As for the social graces, I am convinced that New Trends encourages barbarism, and concerns itself only with free-thinking, free-wheeling and fingerpainting."

Man, Mother Superior got all the best lines, didn't she?

reply

...not really.but yeah its a pretty funny film!

"But I don't know anything about BINDERS"

reply

Two for me

when Rosalind Russell asking for volunteers to visit the old age home
and only two girls raise their hands
she smiles and says, that's fine, the rest if you will spend the day in chapel meditating/contemplating on the sin of selfishness..the rest of the girls raise both hands.haha
also after at the old age home, Mary (HAILEY MILLS) listening the woes and lonlieness of the elderly. she tells the mother.
I hope I die young, and very wealthy!

reply

Miss Phipps: "Willows! Willows! Fluid! Fluuuuuuuuiidddddddddd!"

"It looks positively mediaevel"..."All it's missing is the dragon." <cut to Rosalind Russell>

<Rachel licks her hand and goes to smooth her bangs for the umpteenth time> Reverend Mother: DON'T....you daaaaaaaaare!"

Reverend Mother: Hand me the smaller cutters, I am getting near the ear.
Marvel Ann: OOOOOOOOOOOMMMMMMMPH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Reverend Mother: Now, now dear don't worry!

Reverend Mother: <to Sister Prudence during the fire> No, Sister out the back way. Yes, take Jocko! DON'T RUN SISTER!"

Reverend Mother: "Oh Mary, get rid of the birds nest...<Mary tosses birds nest> No dear <pointing to rat in her hair> that one!"

Mary: "Welcome to Happy Acres" <she and Rachel give the Nazi salute>

Sister Rosemarie: But Reverend Mother, I don't know anything about....binders!
Reverend Mother: Brassiers, sister. BRASSIERES!

Mary: <proudly modeling a lace corset> Jayne Mansfield!
Rachel: <dejectedly trying on sad pink bra> Rock Hudson.

Rachel: I think I am going to kill myself.
Mary: Catholics aren't allowed to.

Also, the visual of Rachel attempting the sign of the cross during the first dinner at the school and the look of utter horror on Reverend Mother's face. I pee myself everytime I see her do the sign of the cross with two hands and criss crossing them across her chest.

TessaMae19, I love that line from TKaM. It has a very personal meaning to me. I lost my sister to cancer this past January and during that final hellish week of staying by her bedside while she lay dying in the hospital, that line kept going through my head. I always thought that the relationship between Scout and Jem mirrored the relationship between my sister and I. I used that line during her eulogy and use it as my signature in honor of her memory. She stayed overnight at our house two weeks before her death and she wanted to watch a movie. Because of the tumors around her brachial tubes, we couldn't watch something that was too laugh-out-loud funny (it was difficult for her to laugh) and certainly didn't want to see something that was too violent or scary (for obvious reason's), so I brought out "The Trouble With Angels". It's humor is warm and sweet and the film is very nostalgic, almost like visiting an old friend. Unbeknown to us, it turned out to be the last film we saw together and the last personal time that we had together. The next time I see TTWA, it will have a differnt effect on me. Thank you for your comment.

I love the smoking scene where they are in the basement toking on cigars and the firemen break the window and Mother Superior leans in and sees them. I also loved it when they went into the sanctuary to do a tour and Mother Superior catches them as they slide down the emergency shoot. Priceless!

Where's the fire?

You also have to love the way Rachel crosses herself (with both hands) at dinner their first night there There are so many hysterical scenes and quotes.

"But mother I don't know anything about binders"

I find it amusing that Mother Superior would say "You'll be happy..." about the most displeasing situation that can possibly befell upon the girls.

What is the one at the very end, something like "I'd rather have one like Mary, who chose, than ten who gave in"?

Rachel: "...and Mr Pietry said it wasn't time for me to come out of my cocoon yet."

Bishop O'Hara: You took a vow of hospitality for all in need.
Rev. Mother: I lied.

reply

From what I remember of that final scene at the train station, the conversation between Rev. Mother and Rachel went something like this:

Rev. Mother (noticing that Mary is ignoring Rachel) "Not one word for Mary, Rachel?"

Rachel - "No!"

Rev. Mother - "Some day you'll understand Rachel"

Rachel - "No I won't! NEVER! She was brainwashed."

Rev. Mother - "You of all people should know how strong she is. She didn't yield Rachel. She CHOSE...and I would rather have 1 Mary who chooses than 100 who yield."

I loved this movie since it was (practically) new. I first saw it at the cinema in 1967 or 1968. I had started to go to a Catholic school only a year before and my Sisters' habit was quite similar to that of the nuns in the movie at the time.

To me, a memorable quote is during the scene at the "Home For The Aged" as Mother Superior is comforting an elderly woman who cried because her children didn't come visit her at Christmas. Reverend Mother said to her, "Be happy. That's the greatest gift a mother can give her children."

John Martin, 46

reply

That was a great quote and good advice from Mother Superior. I saw the movie when it originally appeared in the theatre's and have loved it ever since.

I believe that you will find the hairshirt answer here:

"An extremely uncomfortable garment, the hair shirt was the last word in fashion among self-punishing Christians for centuries."
