The Novel

Has anyone ever read Jane Trahey's novel The Trouble With Angels? Did the 1966 movie do justice to the book?

reply

I read the book and I think the movie did justice to the book. It's been a few years since I read it but a lot of it was carried over to the movie. The thing to remember is that the book was about Jane/Rachel. If I remember correctly, they don't dwell on mischief that the 2 girls get into. The book gets into some of Jane's family life which wasn't in the movie.

If you have the opportunity to rent the book from a library or pick up a copy from eBay, it's worth the read. I read it in a day and think I'll pull it out and read it again!!

Thanks, partner.

In Peter Benchley's book Jaws, Matt Hooper was "playing around" with Sheriff Brody's wife! Steven Spielberg left that out of the movie Jaws(1975). In Strangers on a Train(1951), Guy Haines is a "good guy". In Patricia Highsmith's book Strangers on a Train, Haines completes a criss-cross murder scheme!

The novel has the original title "Life with Mother Superior". It is is extremely amusing, at least for anyone who ever attended Catholic school. I highly recommend it, and yes, the movie captures the spirit of the book and is reasonably close in plot. It is apparently out of print--and terribly expensive--so do check your public library and they can usually borrow it for you on inter-library loan.
