Where was this school located in Penn?

I heard the commentator say this was filmed at the Pennsylvania Children's Home. I cannot locate it on the internet..does anyone know where that school is and what the current name of the school/location is now?
Thanks, this movie has been one of my favorites since it came out.
I even recall the coming attractions on tv; they show Mary and Rachael smoking with the FD breaking in the window.

I'd like to know where this school is now.... does anyone know the name or town where it was filmed. Thanks!

Read the location shooting section. It was filmed at an orphanage in Ambler, PA run by the Sisters of the Holy Family of Nazareth. It is called St Marys Villa for Children which is located in the old Lindenwold mansion. Here is a link about the castle http://www.dupontcastle.com/castles/lindenwo.htm

I grew up in Ambler, PA and used to play on the grounds of the estate as a kid. The castle was at one time the home of a wealthy industrialist (before it was a childrens home) who had most of the houses in the town built for his employees. In the sequel "Where Angels go, Trouble Follows", most of the whole movie is shot in Ambler although the characters are on a cross country trip. The bus kept driving around town in circles. They used to have tours there, but I don't think they have them anymore. The orphanage is hurting so bad for money that they had to sell off some of the estate grounds to land developers and a lot of it has fallen into disrepair.

I've been on 2 tours of the castle and it was great. Even walking the grounds was a thrill. I call each year to see if there's going to be a tour and each year they tell me no. I don't think they've had a tour since 2001. I know there was one scheduled that year but it was cancelled. If you call the home (St. Mary's Villa) they will tell you. You cannot walk the grounds without permission. Some people have wedding pictures taken there. I'll tell you though, if you are a true fan as we all are, even if you stand at the front gate and just stare at the castle, you will have a feeling you'll never forget. The inside was not what you'd expect. As we know, most of the inside scenes were formed in California. During one of the tours, we went up to the 2nd floor. I watched the movie before I went to try and capture a look at some of the rooms. In one of them, the guide said that a movie had been filmed there and that the wallpaper had been painted over but later restored. I think that the sequel is the movie she was speaking of. There was also a 3rd floor but it was closed off. There's also a chapel on the grounds but it isn't the same chapel as the movie. But like I said - if you can't get into a tour and since you can't just walk the grounds, just stand at the front gate. You'll see the winding driveway up to the castle and you will love it. And yes - years ago alot of the property was sold. If you drive around the block behind the castle, all those houses are sitting on former St. Mary's property.

Before it was St. Mary's Villa, the castle and grounds was the home of Dr. Mattison, a big time indusrialist who set up factorys in Ambler. In the beginning of the movie when the bus is entering the grounds, you'll see a huge lake which is man-made and named Loch Linden by Dr. Mattison. Look closely and you'll see a big beautiful statue of an angel in the center of the lake. The exotic statues of sphinxes and asian lions were put there by Mattison and are still there, and so is the little stone gazebo facing the lake, but the last time I saw it the statue of Jesus was missing from it. Also on the property is a huge rectangular garden recesed into the ground shaped like a pool. Story has it that Dr. Mattison's daughter drowned there so he had it drained and made into a rose garden which, from what I remember, has a big statue of the Virgin Mary in it. There is also a big black metal staute of a raven in front of the castle, which I always thought as a kid to be kind of creepy and wondered why it was in front of a Catholic institution, but of course, it was put there by Mattison, with his taste for the exotic. If you look closely in the movie you can see it in some scenes. From what I was told, Mattison grew up in England and as a child always dreamed of having a big castle to live in, like the ones he saw around his town. On Highland avenue, adjacent to the estate, there used to be a huge quarry hole in the ground, which is where i was told the stone for the castle and some of the houses in town came from. Since then, it has been filled in and a park put on it's site. Around St. Mary's Villa today you'll see a lot of big old victorian homes. They where built for Mattison's family members and chief executives in his company. The really big home across the street next to the church belonged to Mattison's son.

Across the street there used to be a huge and beautiful cathedral which was the Trinity Episcopal Church which Dr. Mattison had financed the construction of. When the congregation asked how much in payment they owed him, Mattison said only one red rose per year, in honor of his daughter who drowned. Unfortunitly the church burned down in 1986 due to an electrical problem. A new modern version of the church sits on the sight today.

I hope I have most of the facts straight, most of it was told to me by my dad.

Thanks Vince and everyone for the wonderful details/memories of St. Mary's Villa. I enjoyed reading about them and the person who originally owned the home.

So beautiful, and so sad that something like that can't be preserved. (I suppose some day it'll be razed to make room for strip malls and McMansions, a real shame.)....That's one of the reasons this movie has stayed in my mind for, oh, decades. Even when I saw it at age 15, I was so impressed by the beauty of the setting. Oh, how I wished I could have gone to that school and avoided my whole miserable ordinary high school years.....

There have been some great replies to your question!

Just to confirm - there are currently *no* tours of the grounds. And the grounds are private - they must protect the children who are there.

You can see a recent photo of the castle, plus a recent aerial view on my website:

Your website is good. You may want to correct St. Mary's Manor and St. Mary's castle to the correct name though, which is St. Mary's Villa.

Thanks for the tips. I've amended my wording to avoid any confusion.

There was a St. Mary's Manor in Penndel at one time.

Roadside,

Thanks so much for sharing the website for the Trouble with Angels. I loved seeing the never before shown pictures. I hope they have more footage in the vaults, it would definitely be worth making a DVD.

Gwynedd Mercy Academy is in Ambler?

reply

No, they are not next to each other.

There is a Gwynedd Mercy Academy Elementary School on Norristown Road in Spring House PA, but St. Mary's Villa is on South Bethlehem Pike in Ambler PA.

I didn't think so. I've been there several times and don't recall any schools close by. Lots of stores and houses, but no school.
