Chapel Scene - Nuns Singing
Does anyone know the name of the hymn the nuns were singing when Mary Clancy (Haley Mills) sneaked into the chapel? I believe this was set during the holidays.

shareYes, it was "Angels We Have Heard on High"
shareYes, it was "Angels We Have Heard On High"
Angels we have heard on high
Sweetly singing o'er the plains
And the mountains in reply
Echoing their joyous strains
Glo-ri-a
In excelcis Deo
Glo-ri-a
In excelcis Deo
Shepherds, why this jubilee?
Why your joyous strains prolonged?
What the gladsome tidings be
Which inspire your heavenly song
Glor-ri-a
In excelcis Deo
Glo-ri-a
In excelcis Deo
Come to Bethlehem and see
Him whose birth the angels sing
Come adore on bended knee
Christ the Lord, our newborn King
Glo-ri-a
In excelsis Deo!
Ever since I first saw this movie (7th grade, circa 1967) I can never sing or hear this Christmas carol sung without thinking of the lovely scene in the movie at Christmas in the Chapel... very poignant was candlelight procession entering the chapel, with 12 "postulants" selected for this "leading the parade". Beautiful!
Question: anyone know WHERE this chapel scene was filmed at? Obviously it pre-dated liturgical changes of Vatican II (altar and sanctuary "set"). Anyone??
I was just about nine-impressionable-years-old when I first saw this movie and it was the first time (I can recall anyway) having heard "Angels We Have Heard On High" and I have always judged any other performance of it against that memorable presentation. The holiness and nostalgia in the women's voices wonderfully set off the paradox of the girls' high jinx.
It was probably close to 20 years before I saw the movie again, but I never forgot that scene and the beautiful AWHHOH and always bored anyone within earshot whenever I recounted the scene whenever I heard the hymn--so every Christmas.
