Remake?

Who would you cast in the remake?

reply

Mary Clancy - Scarlett Johansson

Nobody, if it ain't broke, don't fix it. To cite an example of what should have been left alone: The Parent Trap.

reply

I agree completely! I can't even begin to think who to cast because the original is perfect as it is. Only Ms. Mills could play Mary and only Ms. Russell could play Mother Superior.

I agree too! The characters have been set with the original stars. Also, the theme of this movie would not hold up today. The humble innocence of the original is what made it so endearing. And for 1966 showing a teenage girl smoking was really big stuff. Today it would be full of really mean girls so upset at being in a boarding school they would probably try and kill the teachers. Just my two cents worth. I love this movie!!!

Barbara...Pllleeease!!!

reply

I like Lindsay's version better.

I hope there is never a remake BUT - Hayley and June would have to have a role, even if it were a small one. Perhaps some of the old ladies in the nursing home (they'd have to age them, of course). I also think Hayley would make a great Mrs. Mabel Dowling Phipps!

reply

maybe Hayley if they remade should be one of the Nuns? (which kind of ties in with the ending)

reply

Yikes! No remakes, please. But if a remake is made, I hope they cast unknowns. I can't think of a single young actress nowadays who hasn't been prematurely sexualized to the point that all the innocence of the movie would be spiked.

Have another bite of popcorn and forget about it.

I think Amanda Bynes could pull it off.

reply

Oh hey, yeah. I didn't even think of Amanda Bynes... she'd do a great job.

Dakota fanning
Miley Cyrus

head nun role
Julia Roberts

I just can't see them remaking this movie. It was such a different time then.

reply

I don't know about the rest, but I would cast Haley Mills as Sistor Liquori. I think she could handle the comedy well and it suits her more than the other roles.

reply

I know they are a little on the older side now, but I would have loved to see Lindsay Lohan and Ellen Page, and I think Bette Midler would be a perfect Mother Superior!

Chic, Unique & Magnifique!

reply

er...umm..
Hayley Mills
Ros Russell
Marge Redmond and the brilliant June Harding.. no one else can play the roles... here's an idea, don't remake it, re release it to theatres ...

reply

Now <that's> a scathingly-brilliant idea!

This film has been a favorite for more years than I care to remember. It is a true classic. Mills and Harding were perfect in their roles -I can't think of any young actresses of name who could do it as well. And Rosalind Russell should have won an oscar for this one. She manages to demonstrate great strength, tremendous humor, and genuine love in her role as Mother Superior. There are many fine actresses who might take it on, but Ms. Russell's performance is indelible in my heart.

More to the point, a remake would call for a new script, and that would likely be a tremendous let-down. I can't imagine the remake carrying forward the innocence and charm of the original -So what would be the point?

Will-35 is absolutely right: rerelease it as a classic film and let audiences rediscover it.

I don't see how you could capture the same charm. But watching it now, the humor was scathing. No one was safe. So you wouldn't need to update it. Mother Superior ran the school her way, not unlike many CEOs. And the issues the girls had are the same today. But I don't see how you could sell the charm today. This was a school for the upper middle class/rich, and they were rarely seen as the enemy. Today, that might not sell.
