shareThe DVDs of Schroeder Media are usually available at amazon.de.
The DVD appears under the German title "Wie ein Schrei im Wind".
Terrific news! I've been waiting for this for years!
Can be ordered directly from Amazon Germany:
http://www.amazon.de/gp/product/B001M0JIIC/
They say that the movie is presented in its original 2.35:1 aspect ratio, letterboxed 16:9 anamorphic widescreen. Let's hope so. I don't know for sure yet, as the dvd that I ordered has not yet arrived.
Can't wait for this.....wonderful story ,acting, music and spectacular autumn/winter Canadian scenery.Bring it on.
shareHeads up. I just read a review on the Amazon_Germany webpage, http://www.amazon.de/gp/product/B001M0JIIC/.
The reviewer said that the DVD is NOT anamorphic, and is of poor quality – blurry and indistinct.
My advice would be to wait for more reviews before plunking down your money.
One of the Amazon reviews gives only 1 star but the 2nd gives 5 stars. Why such a contradiction? .....and I was really looking forward to this.Blast it.
shareIt appears as though the 5-star review may have been premature.
The one-star review was apparently made by a customer who actually bought this dvd.
Oh cripes....
shareOkay, I finally received my copy of the official DVD from Schröder Media. Here is what I discovered:
The movie is presented in widescreen format. We can see the entire frame in its original 2.35:1 aspect ratio. It's not presented in 16:9 anamorphic format though, only 4:3 letterboxed. The movie has a single audio track, in German. There is NO English audio track.
The quality of the movie is fair, not excellent. Schröder Media apparently did not remaster the movie from a good print. The image lacks detail, lacks sharpness, and scenes are alternately too bright or too dark (they didn't adjust the film's dynamic range for home video).
For the benefit of English speakers, there is a 4:3 cropped pan & scan USA TV version of the movie included as an extra feature. The quality is only fair, the color is faded, the image lacks sharpness, and the movie suffers from the same dynamic range problems as the main feature.
All in all, this DVD is a disappointment. The USA TV version is useless and should not have been included. Rather, the main feature should have been given two selectable audio tracks, German and English, instead of only a German track. It boggles the mind that Schröder Media handled it this way, as it is child's play to add a second audio track to a DVD feature.
The only positive thing that I can say about this DVD is that the main feature shows the entire frame of the original film. I can finally see everything that appeared on the cinema screen at the film's original premiere!
And that's the real disappointment here. There are some wonderful scenic vistas of British Columbia in this film that beg to be seen on a properly remastered and restored 16:9 anamorphic widescreen DVD. Hopefully, we won't have to wait another 40 years for a quality DVD company to come along and do a proper job.
Thanks for saving me 10 Euros.

You can watch the entire movie, in 11 Chapters, on YouTube. Search Rita Tushingham The Trap, and there you'll have it. Some kind person uploaded it.

I would like to thank you for uploading this movie. I saw it years ago on Bravo and really liked it. Hopefully, I can own this for myself soon. Thank you again, rjd0309!

I've been pondering this for a while...
Would it work ripping the German letterboxed dvd, replacing the audio with the english version, and upscaling it to 2.35:1 in a 16x9 frame? ...and then maybe bittorrenting it or something. It wouldn't be perfect but at least we'd have the full frame.
Its a big job. I would do it, but I havn't got the German dvd yet.
Any thoughts?
It's possible to replace the German audio track with an English one. Or even simpler, just add a second (English) audio track.
You could also crop the letterboxed version and rescale to 16:9 anamorphic proportions, probably using an AviSynth script, but you would actually lose picture information in the horizontal anamorphic compression. The picture would end up filling more of a 16:9 widescreen TV -- though it would still be letterboxed, but to a lesser degree -- but it would look a bit fuzzier because you'd be spreading the original picture information over a larger display area.
But the overall picture quality of the Schroeder dvd is so poor, that I don't believe that it would be worth the time and effort to make such modifications.
there is a conversion from the VHS release by a company called vicpine.co.uk
It is in the 4:3 format just like the video release but the picture and sound quality are very good.
i got a copy from vicpine.co.uk and its excellent transfer 4:3 the same as the uk vhs release.
